Minutes of the Richmond Tsunami Forum
16 February 2005
The catastrophic tsunami that woke up the world on December 26th naturally raised questions about the reality here at home. To address these questions, the City of Richmond's Emergency Management Office organized a public forum which was held on January 13th. The Forum focused on the reality and risks of earthquakes and tsunamis in our area.
Hundreds of people attended the forum which hosted a panel of experts in the fields of geology and ocean sciences, as well as City of Richmond Engineering & Public Works, Emergency Management and Building Approvals representatives.
The keynote speaker was Dr. John Clague, Professor and Canada Research Chair in the Department of Earth Sciences at Simon Fraser University. Dr. Clague is an expert in natural hazards and disasters, including earthquakes, tsunamis, landslides and floods. He presented information about the lessons learned from the South Asian tsunami and the risk of a similar event in the Lower Mainland including Richmond, and the potential for liquefaction and its impacts.
