Fun and Informative Events Planned for Environment Week 2005
Richmond will be a paradise for nature lovers during the celebration of Environment Week beginning on May 30, 2005.
The goal of Environment Week is to raise awareness about Richmond's natural beauty. A variety of fun and informative events will be presented by the City and various community groups, which has become so popular that Environment “Week” is spread out over a three-week period.
The celebration will kick off on Monday, May 30 at Terra Nova from 5:00 p.m. to 7:00 p.m. with an opportunity for children 6 to 12 years old to go pond dipping with a naturalist. Slug enthusiasts can get slimed at Slugfest, which will be held at the Richmond Nature Park. There will be fun and games for the slug lovers and their pet slugs, and the grand finale will be the Great Richmond Slug Race on Sunday, June 5 from 1:00 p.m. to 4:00 p.m. Other events include Recycled Art at the Cultural Centre, Fish Festivities at the Cambie Library, Nature Walk at Britannia Shipyard and a Kids Bug Workshop at Hamilton Community Centre.
There is something for everyone, including enough creepy, crawly things to fill a season of Survivor and Fear Factor. Chow down on "Bugs for Dinner" on Wednesday, June 8 at the Richmond Nature Park. There are over 1,400 recorded species of edible insects. Join Karen Needham from UBC Zoology as we explore the worldwide dietary habit of eating insects. For those who prefer eating steam vegetables, you are welcome to participate in the First Nations style cook pit at Garry Point Park on Saturday, June 25 from 11:00 a.m. to 4:30 p.m.
Cyclists will be thrilled to know that they can sign up for a nature bike ride along Sturgeon Banks with the Island City By Bike taking place on Sunday, June 12 from 10:00 a.m. to 2:00 p.m. at Britannia Shipyard National Historic Site. There are 2 routes for this event - one long one short. The largest event for the Environment Week celebration will be the Enviro Fair at King George Park on Sunday, June 12 from 12:30 p.m. to 5:00 p.m. It is held in conjunction with Multifest and is designed to raise public awareness about the environment through fun, interactive displays from environmental organizations. Enviro Fair promotes a philosophy of reduce, reuse, recycle and rethink and encourages sustainable communities.
