Richmond Takes Community Crash Reduction Challenge

Community Crash Reduction Challenge

30 September 2005

Richmond residents can help make their community safer by participating in the Community Crash Reduction Challenge from October 1-31, 2005.

The Community Crash Reduction Challenge is a province-wide competition organized by the Insurance Corporation of BC (ICBC) that challenges communities across BC to reduce vehicle crashes and road-related harm. During October, Richmond residents are challenged to reduce the number of crashes that are predicted to occur in our community.  The community that records the greatest percentage reduction in crashes for its category wins the challenge. The winning community in Richmond’s category will receive a $35,000 road safety grant from ICBC.

Individuals can help Richmond succeed in crash reduction by taking a pledge to drive, cycle or walk safely on the Official Challenge Website. Individuals will be eligible for a grand prize of $35,000 towards the purchase of a new vehicle or additional prizes of a new set of vehicle tires and a new bicycle.

“Community safety is one of Council’s top priorities,” says Richmond Mayor Malcolm Brodie. “Crashes are one of the biggest public safety threats we deal with on a daily basis. I encourage  all drivers to take part and help make our streets safer.”

Based on 2000-2004 data, Richmond is predicted to have more than 1,500 crashes during October, with more than 300 persons injured. The major factors leading to crashes in Richmond are following too closely, ignoring traffic control and speed.

ICBC will undertake a media campaign to raise public awareness of the Challenge beginning this week.  The Challenge will feature a different road safety theme each consecutive week: occupant restraints (seatbelts, child car seats, boosters), unsafe speeding, impaired driving and intersection safety.
