City Wins Commuter Challenge Against WCB
June 24, 2005
The City of Richmond surpassed the Worker’s Compensation Board (WCB) in a friendly challenge to see which organization had the most number of employees using alternative and sustainable modes of transportation on national Clean Air Day.
This is the City’s ninth year challenging employees to use environmentally friendly ways of travelling to and from work, such as cycling, walking, car-pooling, public transit and more. Environmental sustainability and recreation initiatives such as this further demonstrates the City’s organizational and the employees individual commitment to protecting our environment, while enjoying the benefits of increased physical activity.
On June 8, 2005, City employees logged a total of 2,618 kilometres, which means 476 fewer kilograms of greenhouse gases were released into the air as a result of their efforts. The City of Richmond had 10.15 per cent of its 1715 employees participate in this year’s challenge, which surpassed the 9.24 per cent of the WCB’s Lower Mainland employees.
