City of Richmond to Attend Winter Olympics in Torino

21 December 2005

Richmond City Council has approved sending a delegation of Council members and staff to the upcoming Olympic Winter Games in Torino. For more information you may download and view the PDF Document  Torino Mission Backgrounder Report.

The mission will give participants the opportunity to witness the staging of the Olympics first hand and what  its impacts are on City Services and facility operation. Richmond will be home to the speed skating competition for the 2010 Olympic Winter Olympics.

Torino is the final Olympic Winter Games to be staged before the 2010 Games will be held in BC. It will be the only opportunity Richmond has had to attend a Winter Games and to experience every possible scenario in the presentation of one of world’s largest and most complex events.

The City’s delegation will be led by Mayor Malcolm Brodie and Councillor Bill McNulty. The total delegation as approved by Council includes:

  • 4 Senior Delegates, including the Mayor and Councillor McNulty
  • 4 Observer Delegates
  • 1 support position to provide services to all of the City delegation
  • In addition, Council has approved support for the City’s participation in the Strategic Economic Development Program

Most of the City’s delegates will be in attendance for approximately half of the Torino Games, which run from February 10-26, 2006. Total cost of the mission is estimated at $115, 598.

Richmond will be part of a larger mission including delegates from VANOC, Government of Canada, Province of BC, City of Vancouver, Resort Municipality of BC, Four Host First Nations and others. Richmond and the other 2010 Olympic partners have been invited to take part in official learning programs organized by the International Olympic Commission for the benefit of future Games hosts.
