The public is invited to drop by the Operations Yard on Saturday, May 21, 2005 from 9:30 a.m. to 6:00 p.m. a “Water Saver” representatives will be on hand demonstrating the installation and operation of their rainwater barrel products. There are three styles of rainwater barrels being offered at a subsidized price with accessories available at an additional cost.
The program is for Richmond residential customers only, and limited supplies are available. Purchase is on a first come basis. Barrels are available with a sealed top or removable top. Following the information session on Saturday, the weekly hours of operation are Wednesday through Sunday from 9:00 a.m. to 6:00 p.m. Payment is made at the recycling depot.
A 50 per cent subsidized price for a plain 45 (202 Litres) or 50 (225 Litres) imperial gallon reused plastic barrel in white or blue is $20.00. Rainwater barrels are made from reused PVC plastic barrels that previously contained soap or food products and have been triple flushed.
The water diverter unit, a cost of $16, is designed to work with the plain 45 (202 Litres) or 50 (225 Litres) imperial gallon barrels, while the flexahopper unit will require an adjustment to the customer’s existing downpipe. (Purchase of additional downpipe parts is not included.)
A subsidized price of $90.00 has been set for rainwater barrels, which have been specifically manufactured for the collection of rainwater. The dark forest green barrel, made from recycled plastic, has both a connection for a soaker hose, and a faucet for a watering can to allow flexibility in irrigation. Water collected off the roof is considered unfit for human consumption. The intended uses for rainwater collected in the rain barrel are numerous, including watering the gardens, washing outside surfaces and various other purposes the user may benefit from.
