Community to Benefit From East Richmond Gathering Place Project
June 16, 2005
Richmond City Council has contributed funds to the East Richmond Gathering Place Project in King George Park, in partnership with the East Richmond Community Association and Coast Capital Savings.
The East Richmond Gathering Place Project is designed as a neighbourhood focal point that contributes to community distinction, arts, cultural vitality and social interaction. The City is contributing $45,000 towards the development of the project, in addition to the $100,000 for park characterization Council approved earlier this year. The gathering place work will be completed collaboratively with the Association, the City and the community, with support from the Pomegranate Centre of Issaquah, Washington. The benefits of this project will be realized by the strengthening of community partnerships, and the creation of a tranquil and functional environment within the park for all to enjoy.
The development of this community-gathering place will involve community members and stakeholders working together to integrate social, artistic and environmental perspectives in further enhancing King George Park. This initiative is another example of the City’s commitment to partner with our Associations and the community to create beautiful and meaningful gathering spaces in Richmond.
Preliminary design concepts reflect a granite amphitheatre with garden-path gateways, a carved cedar pole, a cedar shelter, and benches with metal-cast iron legs made out of reused material, all located in the west side of King George Park. Work is expected to begin in the fall of this year.
