Water Main Flushing
02 March 2005
Annual Program From March to May
Commencing on March 6, 2005, the Water Services Department will implement its annual water main flushing program. To minimize service interruptions to our customers, this work will be conducted from 10:00 p.m. to 6:00 a.m., Sunday to Friday. The program is expected to run March to May 2005, crews will typically work from the east side to west side of Richmond.
Annual flushing of the water distribution system is important as it allows accumulated silts and organic matter to be flushed out of the water main. Sediments reduce the effectiveness of disinfectants (chlorine) used to fight the growth of bacteria in the water system. By removing sediments, we can reduce the level of chlorine used to disinfect the water.
Flushing may result in pressure fluctuation and some discoloration and sediment in the water that reaches your home. This should be for a short duration only. However, if your water appears discoloured, it is recommended that you run the cold water tap until the discoloured water clears.
