City Enhances Community Safety with Additional Police Resources

Richmond City Council approved funding this year for an additional Royal Canadian Mounted Police officer and five civilian staff, to enhance existing and new public safety programs in Richmond.

The Richmond community will benefit from one new police officer, for a total compliment of 190 officers, two community police station attendants, one electronic management clerk, one CPIC clerk, and one GIS plainclothes assistant. Increasing RCMP staffing will allow regular members to get back into the community, as opposed to being behind a desk completing necessary paperwork.

“In keeping with the City’s priority for community safety in our community, Council and the RCMP have increased our existing staff compliment for the benefit of all those who live, work or visit Richmond,” says Mayor Malcolm Brodie. “We look forward to relocating more officers back on the street for a greater police presence and enhanced community partnerships.”

Anticipating Richmond’s expected population growth to 175,800 this year, adding a new RCMP officer ensures service levels increase or, at least, remain the same in the coming year. Adding additional civilian staff will relieve officers of the daily administrative tasks, such as paperwork, and moves officers back on the street. Further, Richmond is a community leader using the PRIME electronic management system to share information with other police departments, and additional staffing now means long-term benefits of a future paperless environment.

Community partnerships are also highly important, and have been firmly established between Richmond’s community police stations and the community. By Council endorsing additional City Station Assistants, regular RCMP officers will be more visible in the community implementing and co-ordinating root problem solving projects, enforcement and proactively working on community issues.
