Businesses Offered Tips on 2010 Opportunities

20 January 2005

Richmond businesses are being offered a head start at cashing in on the economic opportunities coming to BC from hosting the 2010 Olympic and Paralympic Winter Games. The City of Richmond, Richmond Chamber of Commerce and the 2010 Commerce Centre are joining together to present the Richmond 2010 Opportunities Workshop on Thursday, February 3, 2005.

The workshop will show Richmond businesses how they can take advantage of a once-in-a-lifetime opportunity. It will provide information on finding and taking advantage of 2010 Opportunities and how businesses can get assistance in competing for those opportunities.

Feature speaker at the workshop will be Brian Krieger, general manager of the 2010 Commerce Centre. Launched in October 2004, the 2010 Commerce Centre is the one-stop information source connecting the business community with 2010 Winter Games related information. Currently a virtual operation belonging to the BC Olympic and Paralympic Games Secretariat, the Commerce Centre is expected to develop rapidly, requiring a physical location by late 2006.

Prior to joining the 2010 Commerce Centre, Krieger was the Director of Linx BC - the Province’s Contact Centre Attraction Team. The team played a major role in creating more than 8,500 new jobs in British Columbia. In 2001 Linx BC was named the Best Overall Economic Development Program by Business Facilities Magazine of New York, and in 2003 it was named Program of the Year by the International Economic Development Council in Washington. Kreiger was honored as British Columbia's Economic Developer of the Year for 2003.

The Richmond 2010 Opportunities Workshop will be on Thursday, February 3, 2005 from 2 to 4 p.m. at the Executive Airport Plaza Hotel, 7311 Westminster Highway. Admission is $10, payable at the door. Pre-registration is required. To confirm your attendance at this workshop please send an email to Olympics@richmond.ca or fax to 604-276-4222 with your name, title, company name, full address and other contact information. Space is limited, more than 250 businesspeople have already registered and the remaining spaces are going quickly.

In addition to the feature speaker, Richmond Mayor Malcolm Brodie will officially welcome attendees and there will be a presentation on the Richmond Oval, home of the long track speed skating competition for the 2010 Olympic Winter Games.
