Welcome to Steveston Museum– once a bank and a doctor’s office and now a post office and small museum that offers much to many.
Upon entering this 1905 building, you will pass both a re-creation of the original bank office and a quaint general store exhibit. Ahead of you is the counter of the Steveston Post Office, which together with the Museum found a home in this extraordinary little building in 1978.
The Steveston Post Office is a full service post office with expert staff who offer exemplary customer service. (These long-time locals can also provide you with insider knowledge on the best places to experience and enjoy beautiful Steveston.)
Walking past the locals who might gather to shoot the breeze at any time of day, you can view the re-created kitchen-dining exhibit reminiscent of when a banker’s family lived here until 1918.
Nearby, a twisting staircase will lead you upstairs to a bedroom where the banker’s daughters slept and played. Next door, the photo exhibit takes you on a journey highlighting the best and worst of times of Steveston’s past: pioneers in mud in the 1890s, a town on fire in 1918, the rise of a Japanese-Canadian community and its tragic fall, and above all a brilliant and burgeoning town built on fishing and farming that once made locals forget all about that spot down the road called Vancouver.
School Programs
Ida’s Farm– An on-site (in-class) presentation for pre-schoolers
“My name is Ida and I live on a farm…” So begins the charming and true story of a day in the life of Ida Steves, a little girl who lived in Richmond over a hundred years ago.
Your pre-school class will hear Ida’s story read and explained to them. Students will gain an appreciation of the lives of pioneer children and their families as they explore every day objects like the ones Ida used. The class concludes with a page from Ida’s Farm for students to colour.
Cost: $2.00 per student.
In-Class Steveston Heritage Presentations
A slide show and hands-on artefact presentation in-class provides an overview of the fishing, farming and social history of Steveston from the perspective of a pioneer child. Your class will have the opportunity to investigate a pioneer child's personal items, such as a slate, shoes, text books and more.
Cost: $3.00 per student.
