Ann Marie Fleming: Lip Service
|
5 FEBRUARY 2005 - 9 MARCH 2005 The final products are diverse, like their makers. In one case two women selected the same image and the difference is remarkable. These hooked rugs will be hung in the gallery and the film will be projected, repeatedly, in the window. Considering filmmaking a craft, a construction, Fleming sees the hooked rugs acting as a tactile likeness of her film. The film is itself a combination of live-action and animation. It is about a single, lipless woman who hires herself out as a private detective. She begins to work for a man who is looking for his mother. The more she learns about this missing woman, the more she begins to feel vulnerable about her own circumstances. Self-conscious about her ravaged lip, she proves to be an unreliable narrator. The film explores themes of identity, community and the ever- changing and entrenched roles of women. Ann Marie Fleming is a writer, producer, director and animator. Her films have been shown in film festivals around the world including the Berlinale, Sydney, Toronto, Hong Kong and Mostra festival in Brazil. Her short film, Blue Skies (Heart) was the winner at the Toronto International Film Festival in 2002. Lip Service was screened at several film festivals including the Women Make Waves festival in Taiwan and the Toronto International Film Festival. Fleming holds a diploma specializing in film animation from the Emily Carr Institute of Art and Design, a B.F.A. from Open University in British Columbia, and an M.F.A. in Interdisciplinary Studies from Simon Fraser University. The recipient of numerous grants and awards, she has been making films since 1987. |
